Affordable Health Insurance: Like Food, You Cannot Live Without It

Gone were the days when men could live with the endowment provided by its environment. New inventions using technologies and the modern way of thinking and doing things have no answer on why many have died and are dying at such an early age.

It is caused by the food we eat. Others say it is the air we breathe. Still others claim it is caused by the stress we face each day in our household and in our work place. As natural survivors, man has developed a socialized scheme that would give them health protection and assist them in their economic needs.

One of the better solutions presented is the establishment of a health insurance which can be accessed by majority of the population. Like staple food, a health insurance is fast becoming an icon in the household.

A health insurance is a contract between two parties wherein the health insurance provider commits to deliver the products and services to the second party in exchange for a minimum amount. The second party is willing to pay the amount in exchange for economic and health protection. Health insurance has a wide range of benefit schemes which cut across classes. The amount or premium charged to the insured is now affordable to the working class.

However, the insurance industry is not without challenges. Issues related to poor service delivery, policies that lapsed, expenses or medical claims not reimbursed, conflicting statements on pre-existing conditions, vague policy on excluded diseases, etc….are the perennial concerns of the insured. Thus, the best advice given to those who plan to get a health insurance policy is to review not only the product information but also look into the tract record of the company. The best sales force of an insurance company is one satisfied customer. On the other hand, one dissatisfied customer could spread word as quickly, influencing potential buyers not to patronize the product.

The rate of insurance premium varies depending on the gender, age, medical history and economic package chosen by the insurance applicant. There are also socialized rates for insurance coverage depending on the number of employees per company. The more the number of employees, the lesser is the amount of premium.

Before, health insurance is seen as a ‘game of chance’, with the insured having less chances of availing the full benefit of the insurance package. At present, this perception has changed with the changing lifestyle of man. Research shows that there are a lot of factors that threatens the mortality of man. Studies have shown that chronic high blood sugar level increases the risk of coronary heart disease. Few are also aware that certain food in our diet could cause skin cancer – high intake of food such as whole milk, full-fat yogurt, and cheese.

Fast foods have mushroomed and with it, there is a growing population in the United States who are obese. Obesity increases high blood pressure, high blood lipids and diabetes. Drinking alcohol regularly increases the risk from cancer – cancer of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, liver, colon and breast. Research showed that there are 389,000 cases of cancer and that there are 232,900 cancer deaths annually in the world.

The health of society is important. Every household is encouraged to avail of a health insurance plan. The amount of premium paid to a health insurance provider is so small compared to the life it wants to protect. Like food, a health insurance coverage may make a difference whether we live or die.
